Cachi IG
Cachi has the smallest vineyard area of Salta's four main wine departments, 123 hectares in the 2025 INV count, and it has the highest vines. Colomé planted Altura Máxima at 3,111 metres near Payogasta in 2004, and the first Malbec from it was released in 2012. Colomé lists the vineyard at 26 hectares, while a local article says 23.
Miraluna is the best documented small producer. The Urtasún family began with tourist cabins in 2004, then planted vines at about 2,600 metres at the foot of El Nevado. It makes under 25,000 bottles a year. The soils are poor and well drained, the air is dry and the nights are cold. Harvest starts in late March or early April, later than in Cuyo.
At these altitudes I'd look for whether the acidity holds up against the alcohol.
