Chapadmalal IG

Chapadmalal is the easternmost vineyard area in Argentina. Vines were banned in Buenos Aires province under the 1930 wine law until it was repealed in 1997, so everything here is recent. General Pueyrredón, the partido that holds Chapadmalal, had 43.7 hectares in five vineyards in 2024. That made it the biggest in the province and the source of 70% of its grape harvest.

Trapiche's Costa & Pampa is the project that put the name on the map. It began planting on the Santa Isabel estate in 2009 and had about 25 hectares around 2018. The site is cool and windy, and it gets enough rain, around 1,000 millimetres a year, to farm without irrigation. It sits in Region II on the Winkler index. Spring warms slowly, so frost is a worry, and the soils are described as clay and silt with plenty of calcium. Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon have been tried and often fail to ripen, which is why the plantings lean on early grapes.

I'd look for the Albariño first. SOMM called it very similar to the Albariño of Rías Baixas. The IG itself was recognised in 2014 on an application from Analyn S.A.
