Godoy Cruz IG

Godoy Cruz is a wine department by history. The INV counted 10 hectares of vines across 5 vineyards in 2000 and 0.7 hectares in 1 vineyard in 2018, planted to Malbec only. The 2025 yearbook still shows 0.7. In 2018 the department had 5 registered wineries, and 3 of them made wine.

The old names are what matter. Balbino Arizu and his brothers founded their family wine company in 1888 and bought land in what's now Godoy Cruz, between Belgrano street and Avenida San Martín. The property covered about four hectares. Barraquero, Escorihuela and Tomba worked on the same streets. The Arizu bodega ran for more than a century and closed in 1991, and the building was declared a National Historic Monument in 1999. The municipality took it back in 2019 and uses it for events and tastings.

A bottle with Godoy Cruz as its IG is going to be very rare. If I see one I'll want to know where the grapes were grown.
