Hilario - Valle de Calingasta IG

Hilario's fincas sit on colluvial soil, while the rest of the valley has alluvial soils. A Bichos de Campo piece on Cara Sur says the colluvial soil is deeper, has no rounded river stones and carries a lot of quartz, and ties that to the character of the wines. Hilario and Barreal also have the oldest vineyards in the valley.

Small growers like the Ibazeta family work here. I'd look for the old criolla bottlings and see how that quartz shows up.
