San Martín had 25,416.9 hectares in 2025, down from 26,806 in 2022 across 2,829 vineyards. That's 44% of the vines in the East. Of the grapes used for wine, 44.5% are red, 40% pink and 15.5% white. The INV counted 150 registered wineries, and 99 made wine in 2022.

Bonarda found some of its best ground here. A Great Wine Capitals piece gives San Martín 3,777 hectares of it, the largest area in the country, and says Mendoza has more than 4,000 hectares of Bonarda over 40 years old. In the East, 63% of vines are trained on parral, the overhead pergola, and 36% on trellis.

Bodega Orfila and Familia Crotta are old family houses here. Crotta is known for good damajuana wine and good-value bottles. Matías Morcos works at his family's winery and picks Criolla Chica for a more elegant wine. In a San Martín bottle I'm looking for Bonarda from older vines with some juice and acidity left in it.
