Sarmiento IG
Otronia is described as Argentina's southernmost vineyard. The INV recognised the IG in Resolution 9/2023, published on 29 May 2023, after a request from Extraberries SA. The company owns Bodega Otronia, which Alejandro Bulgheroni started in 2011 on a 1,300 hectare property. About 50 hectares are planted, first to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, then to Merlot, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Torrontés and Malbec. The first vinification was in 2017.
The conditions are extreme. Winter temperatures drop to about -20°C and winds off the Andes can reach 100 km/h. Alberto Antonini, the consultant at Otronia, has described the soils as varied with a lot of limestone, which he compares to Burgundy. I'd look for tension and acidity here, since the wine comes from the edge of what grapes can ripen.
