Trevelin IG

Trevelin was the first IG in Chubut. The INV recognised it in August 2020, after Bodega Casa Yagüe filed the request in 2018 and the file went through soil and climate studies. Only about 12 hectares are planted.

The climate has strong seasons. Frost, rain and snow come mostly between April and August, and rainfall is about 1,000 mm a year. Spring winds blow down from the cordillera, and January and February highs go above 30°C. Growers use anti-frost sprinklers that coat the vines in ice.

Three pioneers make the wines. Casa Yagüe is at kilometre 63.5 on Ruta 259, about 12 km before the border. Viñas del Nant y Fall lies along the Futaleufú river about 30 km up the same road, planted Pinot Noir in 2009 and makes about 12,000 bottles. Contra Corriente, started by Rance Rathie and Travis Smith from Montana, is about 1 km from the town and makes a Pinot Noir. I'm looking for wines with a clean, cold edge and acidity that carries a low-alcohol white.
