Chilecito had 5,532 hectares of vines in 2024, which is 76.7% of the province, in 461 vineyards. It's also the one department that has lost area, down 8.9% from 6,074 hectares in 2015. Its vineyards gave 85% of the province's grape harvest, and 18 of its 26 registered wineries are here. Close to half the province's vines, 46.8%, went in after 2000, and three quarters of those plantings are in Chilecito.
The soils are alluvial, rainfall is about 150 millimetres and the sun is intense. Summer days reach about 35°C and nights fall to about 17°C. La Riojana is the anchor, a cooperative founded in 1940 that processes about 30 million kilos of grapes a year and exports to Sweden, Denmark, the UK and the US. Valle de la Puerta, founded in 1994 by Julian Clusellas in Vichigasta, is the best known private estate.
I'd look for Torrontés Riojano from a named village or vineyard.
