Valles del Famatina IG

This is where most of La Rioja's wine comes from. Chilecito and Famatina together held about 5,998 of the province's 7,210 hectares in 2024, which is 83%. The INV's report says the IG on La Rioja's exported wine in 2023 was Valle de Famatina, which is close to this one's name, and wines carrying an IG made up 51.4% of the province's export volume that year.

Rainfall is about 150 millimetres a year, and the soils are alluvial with a loam to sandy loam texture. Summer days reach about 35°C and nights fall to about 17°C. The names to know are La Riojana, the cooperative in Chilecito, Valle de la Puerta in Vichigasta and Concepción Viñedos Sustentables in Sañogasta. Bodega Chañarmuyo has its own IG, Valle de Chañarmuyo.

When a label says Valles del Famatina I'll read it as a broad regional claim. I'd look for the sub-zone or the vineyard on the label and for Torrontés Riojano that finishes dry.
