IGDistrito Medrano IG
Altillos de Medrano S.A. applied for this IG, and the INV recognised it in Resolution 29/2014, signed on 2 September 2014 and published on 9 October 2014. The INV's own studies found terroirs with distinctive qualities for quality wine.
A regional guide calls Medrano the westernmost part of the East, known for old vines and good-quality wines on gravel-based alluvial terraces. Nine wineries took part in a Día del Malbec held in the village of Medrano, among them Altillos de Medrano, Teutonia, Don Quinto and Marino Brugnola. The LCBO's listing for one Malbec, quoting Patricio Tapia, says half its fruit comes from a Medrano vineyard planted more than 100 years ago.
What I'd look for is old-vine Malbec that carries the Medrano name on the label, which would tell me the grapes were grown inside this small area.
