Pozo de los Algarrobos IG

This is a lowland IG with a long record. The Maurín winery was working here by 1867, and in 1882 wines from the Serú, Maurín y Ruiz firm won the Gran Premio and a gold medal at the Exposición Continental in Buenos Aires, described as the first such honour for an Argentine wine. Modern vineyards came in the 1990s, with trellises and pressurised irrigation, and in 1994 the Australian viticulture expert Richard Smart visited and predicted the area would give its wines distinct characteristics. A 2014 article counted 1,975 planted hectares in 170 vineyards.

The soils are described as deep and permeable, with extra water coming from the Pie de Palo basin. In an interview, the enologist Pedro Pelegrina gave January highs of 35 to 37°C with nights cooling to about 20°C. He also said the day-to-night swing here is relatively narrow. Casa Montes, founded here in 1992 and the applicant for the IG, Callia and Peñavid all have vineyards in the area.

I'd look for the four IG grapes before anything else. Viognier and Petit Verdot are the two grapes one local interview ties to the IG, and I want to see whether a Syrah from this warm floor keeps enough acidity to stay fresh.
