Zonda IG

The INV counted 962.7 hectares of vines in Zonda at the end of 2025. The producers I found are in the Valle de Zonda oasis in the northeast of the department, so that page has the detail.

In the 2019 San Juan tasting the Zonda Bonarda was one of ten top wines from 92 samples sent in by 25 wineries. When I open a Zonda red I'll be looking for the Syrah leather and smoke Carbajo talks about, and for fruit that stays lively through the cold nights.

At a glance

Province: San Juan
Where: Zonda is a department just west of San Juan city. The IG covers the whole department, and two smaller IGs sit inside it: Valle de Zonda (2015) and La Ciénaga - Zonda (2024). The name comes from the Zonda, the warm wind that heats the area.
Registered: 2002, INV Res. C.32/2002
Styles: A 2012 San Juan report said Bonarda and Syrah are the reds best suited to Zonda's warm conditions, and a Bonarda from the Zonda valley made the top ten at a 2019 tasting. Winemaker Carlos Carbajo describes the Syrah as leather, smoke and earth, and the Malbec as spicy with a medicinal note he links to eucalyptus growing nearby. Winepaths mentions some impressive Malbecs from Zonda.
Key grapes: Syrah and Malbec first, then Bonarda and Tannat, with some Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Viognier.
