Salta is small and concentrated. The INV counted 3,701 hectares and 159 vineyards in 2025, which makes it the fourth province by vine area. The average vineyard is 23.3 hectares, the largest in the country. Malbec covers 1,773 hectares and Torrontés Riojano 800.

Malbec has grown fast here. One article puts it up nearly 400% over twenty years, from 337 hectares. Colomé has vineyards from 1,750 metres at La Brava in Cafayate up to 3,111 metres at Altura Máxima. El Esteco and Etchart are the big estates in Cafayate. Miraluna, at about 2,600 metres above Cachi, is a tiny high-altitude project.

When a label says only Salta, I look for a smaller name. Cafayate, Cachi, Molinos and San Carlos say far more about where the grapes grew.
